Juan takes 15 hours to do a job that his father can do in 6 hours. If Juan works 4.5 hours before his father joins him, how long will it take the two of them working together to finish the first job? Marilyn drove her car from Lubbock to Houston at an average rate of 48mph and returned averaging only 28mph. Find the time going and returning if the time returning was 5 hours more than the time going?

work that Juan can do in 1hour = x work that father can do in 1hour = y Total workload = 15x = 6y y = 15/6 x = 5/2 x = 2.5x Work Juan did in 4.5 hours = 4.5x Work left = 15x - 4.5x = 10.5x work both can do in 1 hour = x+y = x+2.5x = 3.5x Time taken for both of them to complete = 10.5x/3.5x = 3 hours Time taken for going = x hr Tame taken for returning = (x+5) hr As distance is same in both cases, x*48 = 28*(x+5) 48x-28x = 28*5 20x = 140 x= 7 hrs
